We would like to begin with a Glossary of Terms, however. In our business sector we have a wonderful array of names and terms – often overlapping – and we hope this list assists understanding:
A tower or vessel or column in which a gas is contacted by a liquid to absorb some gaseous content. Sometimes also known as ‘Scrubber’ or ‘Gas Washer’
A mist eliminator in cylindrical form, with a filter bed made of fibres.
An impingement type filter comprising an array of angled profile plates through which gas is passed to remove larger droplets. Also known as ‘Vanes’, ‘Vane Packs’, ‘Droplet Separators’, ‘Demister’.
A mesh pad type filter made of co-knitted wire and fibre mesh. Used either as a first stage agglomerator to increase the collection efficiency of a demister, or as media for liquid/liquid separation.
Also Coalescers can be made as cylindrical cartridges, with a different form of fibrous media used to coalesce liquids for gas/liquid separation or for liquid/liquid separation.
Usually means a filter made of layers of knitted wire mesh. It is sometimes used to mean other types of droplet or mist eliminating devices, e.g. candle filters, vane packs. Also known as ‘Mesh Pad’, ‘Knitted Mesh’, ‘Crinkled Wire Mesh Pad’, ‘Foam Arrestor’, ‘Droplet Separator’.
A piece of equipment used to remove particles (liquid or solid) from an air or gas flow to achieve a defined efficiency.
Treating a process or venting gas by contact with a neutralising liquid, a washing liquid, a deodourising liquid, a physical filtration or separation media, as a single stage or as a system, to remove contaminants within a process or before emission to atmosphere (also known as Tail Gas Scrubbing)
The use of knitted wire materials including fibrous coalescer material, or cylindrical form cartridges made of fibre media, to separate liquids of different density when the mixture is passed through it.
Usually means a mist eliminator in cylindrical form, with a filter bed made of fibres. Occasionally used to mean other types of droplet or mist eliminating devices, e.g. demisters, vane packs. Also known as ‘Candle Filter’, ‘Brinks’, ‘Fibre Beds’.
A form of fibre filter, chiefly for high velocity service, with a rectangular frame and a fibre filling. Multiple panel filters are installed in polygon or square structures. Older styles required the panel to have a bolted flange to attach it to the frame structure inside the vessel.
Begg Cousland Envirotec developed a modern version of the Panel Filter, which is installed and removed from outside the tower, vertically into frames. See section in ‘Applications / Sulphuric Acid / Drying Tower’
Equipment used in processes which does not have a Filter or Gas Cleaning function, but which has a synergy to them, and which can often be packaged with them.
A type of gas cleaning equipment comprising a tower or vessel or column in which a gas is contacted by a liquid to remove gaseous, liquid, solid or odourous contaminants, often using a chemical reaction.
A piece of equipment used to remove particles (liquid or solid) from an air or gas flow to achieve a certain collection efficiency, often having a second stage for ‘polishing’.
Random dumped or structured forms of packing installed in a tower or vessel or column to assist the counter-current contact between a downward flowing liquid and an upward flowing gas. Also known as ‘Column Packings’.
An impingement type filter comprising an array of angled profile plates through which gas is passed to remove larger droplets. Also known as ‘Chevrons’, ‘Droplet Separators’, ‘Demister’.
